Recognizing the Warning Signs of Gallstones

Gallstone disease is a common condition, particularly in adults over the age of 40, and is more frequently seen in women than men. Many patients often mistake the symptoms for gastritis and self-medicate, delaying proper treatment until the condition worsens. Recognizing the signs of gallstones early can help prevent serious complications.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

  • Severe abdominal pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, lasting from 15 minutes to several hours; the pain may radiate to the right shoulder or between the shoulder blades.

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Digestive discomfort such as bloating, indigestion, heartburn, or excessive gas, especially after eating fatty meals

  • If acute cholecystitis develops, patients may experience fever, severe pain under the right rib cage, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and dark urine
